ERP Software among Tools Used to Optimize a Manufacturing Operation

In the manufacturing arena, the quest for increased efficiencies has been a continuing catalyst for innovation. An example of this would be the evolution from relatively crude “hands-on” production methods to sophisticated manufacturing software-controlled processes in just a few generations. But advancements in information technology are only part of the enhanced production efficiency equation.

The Tools and Principles of Modern-Day Production

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software systems have been on the manufacturing scene for several decades now. Over time, ERP solutions have become increasingly powerful as their capabilities have continued to expand. These systems benefit manufacturing outfits in many ways. But mainly, ERP software — and on a smaller scale, job shop software — facilitates the integration of all processes within a manufacturing operation. They maximize efficiencies within every function, from front office endeavors and production floor activities to the delivery of products to the customer’s receiving dock.

Along with robust IT tools and software applications, a variety of techniques and principles have been incorporated into manufacturing practices throughout the years, increasing process and production efficiencies even further. Terms such as “just in time (JIT),” “kanban” and “six sigma” are referred to with relative frequency within manufacturing circles. These are tried-and-true philosophies and methodologies that have greatly contributed to the effectiveness and financial health of manufacturing operations around the world.

Basically, JIT, kanban and six sigma are part of an overall “lean manufacturing” strategy that focuses on strict inventory control and management, the streamlining of production processes, identifying and addressing inefficiencies and minimizing waste in all areas. Other lean manufacturing objectives include optimizing warehouse design and organizing workspaces in such a manner that best promotes a smooth workflow.

By assimilating these and other “lean” techniques into their business and production practices, manufacturing entities are able to achieve “more with less,” reducing overhead, inventory carrying costs and production times as a result.
